This CD-ROM contains the text of the interdisciplinary study “Attacking the Root Causes of Torture: Poverty, Inequality and Violence” as published by the World Organisation Against Torture in September 2006 and reference and background documents relevant to that study.
The study as published
Part I of the study presents (1) an extensive academic analysis of the correlations between socio-economic inequalities and violence in 63 countries based on unique survey data from the International Labour Organisation, (2) an analysis of women’s property ownership and domestic violence in South Africa, and (3) an examination of the relationship between socio-economic hardship and violence in the developed economy of Sweden.
Part II presents in-depth analyses of the situation of human rights, poverty, inequality and violence in (4) Argentina, (5) Egypt, (6) Nepal, (7) South Africa and (8) Uzbekistan together with case studies examining in detail specific situations of violence resulting from violations of economic, social and cultural rights.
Part III considers how the (9) United Nations special procedures mechanisms, (10) UN treaty bodies, (11) the ILO, (12) the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and (13) the World Trade Organization approach the issue of poverty, inequality and violence, and how they have or could have an impact on that link.
Reference and background documents
A large amount of information was developed in the preparation of the study that could not be included in the published version. Many of the study’s chapters are based on larger studies containing additional information and analysis and those larger studies along with other relevant information and reports are included, here, in this CD-ROM.
This study and conference were carried out by OMCT and were included within the programme of the Geneva International Academic Network (GIAN) and made possible through the financial support of the GIAN, the Dutch Foundation ICCO (Interchurch Organisation for Development Cooperation), the Fondation des droits de l’homme au travail and the Swiss Federal Government (Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation).
