Zimbabwe

At a glance

Since the fall of president Robert Mugabe in 2017, Zimbabwe has not achieved a successful transition towards democracy and the rule of law. Human rights defenders, activists and civil society groups continue to be at risk. Rights groups continue to hold the government to account through street protests and via social media, including the 2020 campaign #Zimbabweanlivesmatter. Arbitrary detentions, intimidations, threats and persecution continue through the use of laws to crack down on dissenting voices and shrink the space for civil society. Zimbabwe has not yet adopted the UN Convention against Torture, despite its Constitution stating that no person may be subjected to physical or psychological torture. State security agents continue to use excessive force in dispersing protests and assemblies.
