Iraq

At a glance

Since the end of military operations in 2017 aiming to take over the areas under the control of the so-called Islamic State (IS), Iraqi armed forces have carried out collective punishment against families and people allegedly belonging to IS by preventing them from accessing humanitarian aid, limiting their freedom of movement, and using rape and torture in places of detention. There are also serious allegations of numerous human rights violations, including the use of excessive force, intentional killings, kidnappings, reprisals and arbitrary arrests against demonstrators during the 2019-2020 large scale popular protests against corruption, unemployment and inefficient public services.
