Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB)

Areas of Work

ADHRB works on torture and human rights in Bahrain and the Gulf region, documenting human rights violations remotely given the total lack of civic space in the region. It fosters awareness of democracy and human rights in Bahrain and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and assists victims of torture.

ADHRB’s main activities are advocacy and campaigns, including with governments and international bodies that can positively influence the situation. Recent successes include obtaining language on Bahraini human rights violations in the United States Senate legislation and three joint resolutions from the European Parliament on GCC countries. It also submits communications regularly to the United Nations Special Procedures. This work has resulted in over 1,000 UN Special Procedure communications on GCC persons or subjects in the last decade.

ADHRB has also created a program enabling victims of torture and their family members to seek counseling from therapists in Western countries, as finding therapy to deal with the consequences of torture is impossible in Bahrain.
