RDC 003 /0105/OBS 039.01
Releases from detention
Democratic Republic of Congo
16 May 2001

The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of FIDH and OMCT, has been informed of the release of two human rights defenders in the Democratic Republic of Congo

New information :

The Observatory has been informed by ASADHO (African Association for the Defence of Human Rights) and the Centre for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (CDH) that Jeanne Bilonda and Hubert Tshiswaka, both members of the Katanga section of ASADHO, were released from detention on 15 May at about 6 p.m. They were arrested on 14 May 2001 at the end of the afternoon at the headquarters of the Association (Lubumbashi) and taken to the headquarters of the National Intelligence Agency (Agence nationale de renseignements (ANR) in Lubumbashi.

They were allegedly accused of spying as they were on their way back from the residence of the Belgian Consul General where they had been invited to a meeting.

According to information received, Mme Bilonda and Mr. Tshiswaka had been followed for about a week before.

The Observatory is very pleased to announce this release and thanks all individuals and organisations who intervened on their behalf.

However, the Observatory would like to issue a reminder that Golden Misabiko, another member of ASADHO - Katanga is still reported as missing after having been arrested by two men in plain clothes on 5 February 2001 and taken the next day to the GLM detention centre in Kinshasa (Cf. Urgent Appeal RDC 002/0102/OBS 010). The Observatory is very concerned about Mr. Misabiko's physical and psychological and calls for continued mobilisation on his behalf.
