The International Secretariat of OMCT requests your URGENT intervention in the following situation in Iran.

New Information

The International Secretariat of OMCT is gravely concerned by the information received from a reliable source reporting the sentencing of 10 Iranian Jews, and acquittal of 3 Iranian Jews, amongst others, on 1st July 2000.

The International Secretariat has received the following names of some of those sentenced. It is reported that all those convicted are appealing:

Farzad Kachi, 33 years old, who did no confess was sentenced to 10 years;
Djavid Bentyaghoub, 30 years old, who did not confess was sentenced to 8 years;
Ramin Farzan, 26 years old who confessed was sentenced to 10 years;
Nasser Levi Haim, 30 years old, who confessed was sentenced to 11 years;
Chahrokh Paknahad, 39 years old, who confessed, was sentenced to 8 years;
Ramin Neemantizadeh, 28 years old, who confessed, was sentenced to 4 years;
Farhad Saleh, 40 years old, who confessed, was sentenced to 8 years;
Hamid (Dany) Tefilin, 24 years old, who confessed, was sentenced to 13 years;
Asher Zadmehr, 54 years old, who confessed, was sentenced to 13 years;
Faramarz Kachi, 39 years old, who confessed, was sentenced to 5 years.

According to the information received, the following persons were acquitted, although their release has not been confirmed:
Omid Tefilin, 27 years old;
Nejat Boroukhimnejad, 35 years old.

The International Secretariat wishes to note that the above information is the most recent received and may differ slightly from that in the previous appeal, IRN 120400.

Brief reminder of the situation

The International Secretariat of OMCT was informed by a reliable source of the trial of 21 persons, including a child, who could face the death penalty in Iran.

According to the information received, 21 Iranians, 13 Jews and 8 Muslims, accused of spying for Israel and the United States and arrested in the months of March and April 1999, faced trial on 13th April 2000 in Shiraz. If convicted, they could face the death penalty. The youngest of this group is a 16 year old (see Case IRN 120400.CC)

Action requested

Please write to the authorities in Iran urging them to:

take all necessary measures to guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of the above-mentioned persons and order a review of their sentences, guaranteeing their procedural rights at all times;

guarantee the respect of human rights and the fundamental freedoms throughout the country in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
