NGOs call for release of human rights defender Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja on 7th anniversary of his arrest

Sevenyears ago this month, renowned human rights defender Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja was dragged from his home in Bahrain,tortured, tried in a military court, and sentenced to life in prison for hispeaceful role in 2011 protests. Today, 05 April, on Al-Khawaja’s 57thbirthday, the undersigned human rights organisations call for his immediaterelease and for all human rights defenders jailed in Bahrain to be freed.
OnMonday 09 April, human rights organisations, friends, and supporters will jointwo of Al-Khawaja’s daughters, Zainab and Maryam Al-Khawaja, for two events in London:

AbdulhadiAl-Khawaja is an internationally-known Bahraini-Danish human rights defenderwho is the founder and former President of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights(BCHR), established in 2002, and a Founding Director of the Gulf Centre forHuman Rights (GCHR), established in 2011. He was Middle East and North AfricaProtection Coordinator for Front Line Defenders until February 2011, when heresigned during the popular movement in Bahrain.
Hewas violently arrested on 09 April 2011 and charged in connection with hispeaceful human rights activities. This was followed by brutal torture,resulting in a broken jaw and requiring several operations, then finally by anunfair trial grossly violating international standards for fair trials and dueprocess. He undertook a number of hunger strikes to protest torture and poorprison conditions.
Al-Khawajais one of a group of 13 human rightsdefenders and political activists (the Bahrain 13) sentenced to lengthyprison terms solely for exercising their right to freedom of expression,association and peaceful assembly. Following a grossly unfair trial, Al-Khawajawas sentenced by the National Safety court (a military court) on 22 June 2012to life in prison, along with seven other members of the Bahrain 13. As thesentence was being pronounced, Al-Khawaja raised his fist saying: “We willcontinue on the path of peaceful resistance.”
Thecurrent situation in Bahrain is dire. The vast majority of human rightsdefenders are in jail, in exile, under travel ban, or enduring severe threatsand intimidation as a result of their peaceful work. Dozens have been abusedand tortured. International NGOs and journalists have been prevented fromvisiting Bahrain to document the government’s ongoing human rights abuses.
Atthe same time, Bahrain continues to host events such as the Formula One 2018Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from 06 to 08 April, during which time any protestsare sure to be met with reprisals.
Justtwo days ahead of the Formula One, on 04 April 2018 at 02am, Lars Aslan Rasmussen, a Danish Memberof Parliament, and Brian Dooley,GCHR Advisory Board member, arrived inBahrain in an attempt to visit Al-Khawaja in prison. They were refusedentry on the basis that they posed a “security risk” anddeported.
We theundersigned call on the authorities in Bahrain to:
- Immediately and unconditionally free Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja and all other human rights defenders from prison;
- Provide proper access to medical care and sanitary conditions in prison;
- Allow Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja and all prisoners proper access to families;
- Allow international NGOs and journalists free access to Bahrain, including for the purposes of visiting detained human rights defenders; and
- Guarantee in all circumstances that human rights defenders in Bahrain are able to carry out their legitimate activities without fear of reprisals and free of all restrictions including judicial harassment.

البحرين: منظمات غير حكومية تطالب بالإفراج عن مدافع حقوقالإنسان عبد الهادي الخواجة في الذكرى السابعة لاعتقاله
في مثل هذاالشهر منذ سبع سنوات، اعتقل المدافع المعروف عن حقوق الإنسان عبد الهادي الخواجة من منزله في البحرين، وتعرض للتعذيبوحوكم أمام محكمة عسكرية، حيث حُكم عليه بالسجن مدى الحياة لدوره السلمي فياحتجاجات عام 2011. اليوم، 05 أبريل/نيسان، في عيد ميلاد الخواجة السابع والخمسين،تطالب المنظمات الحقوقية الموقعة أدناه بالإفراج الفوري عنه وإطلاق سراح جميعالمدافعين عن حقوق الإنسان المعتقلين في البحرين.

يعد عبد الهاديالخواجة مدافعاً عن حقوق الإنسان معروفاً دولياً، يحمل الجنسيتين البحرينيةوالدنماركية، وهو المؤسس والرئيس السابق لمركز البحرين لحقوق الإنسان، والذي تأسسفي عام 2002، وهو كذلك المدير المؤسس لمركز الخليج لحقوق الإنسان، الذي تأسس فيعام 2011. لقد عمل كمنسق حماية لمنطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا بمنظمة فرونتلاين ديفندرز حتى فبراير/شباط 2011 عندما تقدم باستقالته أثناء الحركة الشعبية فيالبحرين.
أُلقي القبضعليه بشكل عنيف في 09 أبريل/نيسان 2011 ووجهت إليه الاتهامات بسبب أنشطته السلميةفي مجال حقوق الإنسان. وأعقب ذلك تعذيباً وحشياً، أسفر عن كسر في الفك واستلزم عدةعمليات جراحية، وأخيراً محاكمات جائرة تنتهك بشكل صارخ المعايير الدولية للمحاكمةالعادلة والإجراءات القانونية الواجبة. وقام بعددٍ من الإضرابات عن الطعامللاحتجاج على التعذيب وسوء ظروف السجن.
أن الخواجةهو واحد من مجموعة من 13 مدافعاً عن حقوق الإنسان وناشطاً سياسياً(مجموعة البحرين 13) من الذين حُكم عليهم بالسجن لفترات طويلة بسبب ممارستهم لحقهمفي حرية التعبير وتكوين الجمعيات والتجمع السلمي. وعقب محاكمة جائرة للغاية، حكمتمحكمة السلامة الوطنية (محكمة عسكرية) على الخواجة في 22 يونيو/حزيران 2012 بالسجنمدى الحياة إلى جانب سبعة أعضاء آخرين من مجموعة البحرين 13. وعندما تم النطقبالحكم، رفع الخواجة قبضته قائلاً: "سنواصل طريق المقاومة السلمية."
إن الوضعالحالي في البحرين مريع. تتعرض فيه الغالبية العظمى من المدافعين عن حقوق الإنسانإلى السجن والنفي وحظر السفر أو يتحملون التهديدات والترهيب الشديد نتيجة لعملهمالسلمي. لقد تعرض العشرات للإساءة والتعذيب. وتم منع المنظمات غير الحكوميةالدولية والصحفيين من زيارة البحرين لتوثيق إنتهاكات الحكومة المستمرة لحقوق الإنسان.في الوقت نفسه ، تواصل البحرين استضافة فعاليات مثل فورمولا 1 جائزة البحرينالكبرى لطيران الخليج 2018 في الفترة من 06 إلى 08 أبريل/نيسان، ومن المؤكد خلالهذه الفترة أن أي احتجاجات ستقابل بالانتقام.
قبل يومينفقط من فعالية فورمولا 1، في الثانية صباحاً من يوم 4 أبريل/نيسان 2018، وصل لارس اصلان راسموسن، عضو البرلمانالدنماركي، وبراين دولي، عضو المجلسالاستشاري لمركز الخليج لحقوق الإنسان، إلى البحرين في محاولة لزيارة الخواجة فيالسجن. لقد تم رفض دخولهم على أساس أنهم يشكلون "مخاطر أمنية" وتم ترحيلهم.
نحن الموقعون أدناه، ندعو السلطات في البحرين إلى:
- إطلاق سراح عبدالهادي الخواجة، وغيره من المدافعين عن حقوق الإنسان من السجن فوراً دون قيدٍ أو شرط؛
- توفير الوصول السليم للرعاية الصحية وكذلك الظروف الصحية في السجن؛
- السماح لعبدالهادي الخواجة وجميع السجناء بالتواصل المناسب مع عائلاتهم؛
- السماح للمنظمات غير الحكومية الدولية والصحفيين بالوصول إلى البحرين بحرية، بما في ذلك لأغراض زيارة المدافعين عن حقوق الإنسان المعتقلين؛ و
- ضمان في جميع الظروف أن المدافعين عن حقوق الإنسان في البحرين قادرون على القيام بأنشطتهم المشروعة دون خوف من الانتقام وخالية من جميع القيود بما في ذلك المضايقات القضائية.
