Sudan: arrest of nine political activist

The International Secretariat of OMCT requests your URGENT intervention in the following situation in Sudan.

Brief description of the situation

The International Secretariat of OMCT has received information from the Sudanese Victims of Torture Group (SVTG), a member of the OMCT network, regarding the arrest of 8 people on Monday 18th September 2000 in the City of Kosti, 175 miles south of Khartoum and the arrest of Adam Mohamed Ahmed, member of the Political Bureau the Democratic Unionist Party and a delegate to the National Democratic Alliance, (NDA), on 20th September 2000. The whereabouts of the detainees is unknown to their families and their lawyers.

Those arrested are: Zaki Mansour, Lawyer, was released on Tuesday 19th September 2000 only to be rearrested on Wednesday. Alrasheed Ali Omer, Advocate, also released on 19th September 2000 and rearrested on Friday. Said Hassan Altoum, Advocate, Ahmed Hassan, Worker in Sudan railways, Tariq Mohamed Jalal Aldin, Secondary school teacher, Abd Alaziz Al Mobark, Teacher, Mohmed Suilman, Agricultural Inspector, Mohmed Babiker, Studio Photographer.

The 8 people were arrested after two days of demonstration in Kosti City on 17 and 18 September. Police and the Security reportedly left two people dead and scores of others injured. The demonstration started in Kosti after the death of the student, Mohamed Saad Idris, who was shot dead while trying to escape form the camp run by the Administration of the Compulsory National Service.

Adam Mohamed Ahmed was arrested on the 20th September 2000 at Khartoum airport upon his arrival from Asmara. He had attended the NDA general conference which was held mid-September in Musawa. As of 25th September 2000 he had still not been released and his whereabouts remain unknown.

OMCT reiterates SVTG’s fears for the safety and integrity of all detainees since torture and mistreatment are well known and well reported in secret detention centres in Sudan.

Action requested

Please write to the authorities in Sudan urging them to:

i. take all necessary measures to guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of all detainees and order their immediate release in the absence of valid charges, or if such charges exist, bring them before an impartial and competent tribunal and guarantee his procedural rights at all times;

ii. guarantee the respect of human rights and the fundamental freedoms throughout the country in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
