Human Rights Defenders
In more than 80 countries, fighting for the respect of human rights is a high-risk activity, and groups and individuals who engage themselves on this road are the preferred targets of authorities and private groups who make use of enforced disappearances, summary executions, arbitrary detention or torture to keep them quiet.
OMCT has played a pioneering role in the protection of human rights defenders (HRDs). Since its creation, it has denounced the repression to which they are submitted. In 1997, OMCT created the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders in partnership with the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). This unique collaboration is based on the complementarity of each organisation’s approach and is based on their respective NGO networks.
The “Human Rights Defenders” programme intervenes, especially via the Observatory, through various means:
AcknowledgmentsThe Observatory thanks for their support the Canton of Geneva, the European Commission, the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Fondation de France, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the International Organisation of the Francophonie (OIF), the Liechtenstein Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the OAK Foundation, the Sigrid Rausing Trust, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, along with all the persons, national and international organisations, intergovernmental organisations and media which responded to the Observatory’s requests and supported its actions.
