Accompanying Local Partners

As a network-based organisation, OMCT has always sought to support local actors in their effort to protect human rights. Such support has been largely provided through joint activities and campaigns, the promotion of peer exchanges, the provision of expertise and capacity building and many other solidarity-based actions.

In recent years, financial support has emerged as an important complement to such support and joint actions. OMCT’s approach and philosophy of financial support are grounded in our mission and strategic priorities - strengthening and sustaining the work of civil society organisations and human rights defenders (HRDs), including SOS-Torture members, and better-protecting individuals who have faced or are facing torture and ill-treatment.

The cycle of financial support is built on the conviction that empowering the local movement with substantial and flexible financial support as well as holistic accompaniment nourishes the regional and global collective, anchoring the struggle from the ground up and creating a stronger, more interconnected civil society.

Mexico

During 2024, OMCT supported Justicia Pro Persona in Mexico with the support of the European Union. In their words “this process marked a before and after in the history of Justicia Pro Persona, as never before had we had the opportunity for a profound process of this nature. [...] This process reinforced our institutional structure, making it more solid and resilient to face future challenges with greater strength”.

Cote d’Ivoire

In Cote d’Ivoire, as part of the actions conducted in the framework of the United Against Torture Consortium (UATC), our network member MIDH and partner CIDDH shared that “after this project, the organizations will be equipped to document cases, focus their advocacy actions and be able to collaborate with the Committee against Torture (CAT) by monitoring the implementation of recommendations and submitting alternative reports”

The budget dedicated to financial support to local partners and direct assistance for HRDs, organisations, and victims has increasing relevance in OMCT’s operations and finances.
