Committee on the Rights of the Child: 43rd session from September 11th to 29th in Geneva

Independent experts of the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) meet from September 11th to 29th 2006 at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva (Switzerland) to consider the initial reports of Democratic Republic of Congo and Swaziland, as well as the periodic reports of Benin, Ethiopia, Ireland, Jordan, Kiribati, Oman, Samoa and Senegal.
Regarding the particular situation of children’s rights in Benin, OMCT has submitted an alternative report to the Committee’s pre-session on 6th June 2006 highlighting the complexity of violence against children within Beninese society, where children are far from being considered as real subjects of rights but rather as parental or familiar belongings. Address poverty and sensitise the population to change mentalities remain the keys to improve children’s situation. OMCT is very concerned about the frequency of violence cases and particularly about corporal punishment and sexual violence and abuse, which are mainly perpetrated by those who are in charge of the children’s education, care and protection.
This report resulted from a preparatory mission and a research carried out together with two local NGOs: Solidarity for Children in Africa and the World (ESAM), member of the SOS-Torture Network coordinated by OMCT and Animation et Développement des Initiatives Artisanales et Aide à l’Enfance (ANDIA).

Besides, the Committee considers the initial reports of Denmark, the Syrian Arab Republic and Vietnam, received under the Convention’s Optional Protocol on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography. In addition, initial reports of Kazakhstan, Malta and Vietnam issued under the Convention’s Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Children, are also scheduled.
