'Yemen: Sudanese journalist threatened in Yemen

The International Secretariat of OMCT requests your URGENT intervention in the following situation in Yemen.

Brief description of the situation

The International Secretariat of OMCT is gravely concerned for the physical and psychological integrity of Mrs Aida Abdul-hameed, a Sudanese journalist working in Yemen, as a correspondant of the "Sayedati" Weekly Arabic magazine.

According to information received from the Sudanese Victims of Torture Group (SVTG), a member of the OMCT network, Mrs Aida Abdul-hameed has received anonymous phone calls, on three occasions in recent days, stating that she will face harm if her magazine does not stop publishing articles regarding the trial of a Sudanese man who faces trial in Yemen accused of killing many young women.

Action requested

Please write to the authorities in Yemen urging them to:

i. take all necessary measures to guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of Mrs Aida Abdul-hameed and to put an end to these threats and harassment;
ii. order a thorough and impartial investigation into these threats in order to identify those responsible, bring them to trial and apply the penal, civil and/or administrative sanctions as provided by law;
iii. guarantee the respect of human rights and the fundamental freedoms throughout the country in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
