For the past few years, Chile has been facing a major human rights crisis. Many cases of police brutality and excessive use of force by the security forces against demonstrators are reported, with the stated intention of « punishing and instructing » them. There are allegations of ill-treatment against detained demonstrators and acts of sexual violence against women and girls during student protests. Furthermore, the deaths of minors and allegations of torture and ill-treatment in residential protection centres is a concerning issue. Some reports indicate that staff, including medical staff, have committed acts of torture and sexual abuse against minors in detention. Various of these crimes remain unpunished. The OMCT is engaged with its local partners to report allegations of the widespread and excessive use of violence by law enforcement during demonstrations.
