Demonstrations against a bogus presidential election and the renaming of the capital in honor of the former president led to a violent crackdown against protesters and civil society activists in spring 2019. In its latest review in 2014, the UN Committee Against Torture (CAT) highlighted the lack of impartial bodies to effectively investigate complaints about torture and to independently monitor places of detention. Over the years, the OMCT has advocated for the release of human rights defenders and activists.
