Kyrgyzstan

At a glance

Although Kyrgyzstan is more democratic than its authoritarian neighbors, the prevalence of torture, a lack of accountability of State officials for torture and inhuman and degrading conditions in prisons are similar to other Central Asian countries. The authorities also fail to protect human rights defenders and members of the LGBTIQ+ community against violence by right wing extremists. Kyrgyzstan submitted its second report to UN Committee Against Torture (CAT) with a delay of 10 years. Its third report, also submitted late, is coming up for review at the end of 2020. Over the years, the OMCT has advocated for the release of human rights defenders and activists.
