There are still many shortcomings in the protection of human dignity, despite improved compliance with the Convention against Torture in both policies and legislation. Cases of excessive use of force and other police abuse are reported, in particular against people belonging to certain racial and ethnic groups. Despite measures to reduce prison overcrowding, occupancy rates remain high in some places of detention, leading to poor conditions for inmates. Regulations on solitary confinement, which go up to 30 days for several serious offences, do not correspond to international human rights standards. There are also reports of excessive detention of asylum seekers. This includes issuing immigration detention orders without individualized assessment or consideration of alternative measures.
