The political division that began in 2007 between Hamas and Fatah has been a source of violence, serious human rights violations and lack of accountability. This division led to an excessive use of force against protesters, detention of political activists, and torture and ill-treatment. There has been a severe lack of compliance with international human rights standards. Cases of violations have been reported in the West Bank against activists and political opponents detained on the basis of overly broad laws. In Gaza, those who are accused of collaboration or “moral crimes” have also been subject to torture and ill-treatment.
