Congo Lucha,
a documentary on a youth group promoting democracy and human rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo directed by Marlène Rabaud, received the 2019 OMCT prize at the Geneva International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH).

Egypt:  Enforced disappearance of ECRF Researcher Mr. Ibrahim Ezz El-Din

The Observatory expresses its utmost concerns over the enforced disappearance of Mr. Ibrahim Ezz El-Din and urges the Egyptian authorities to immediately disclose his whereabouts and allow him access to his lawyer and family. The Observatory fears that Mr. Ibrahim Ezz El-Din’s enforced disappearance comes as a result of his criticism of the policies of the government towards shanty urban areas and slums, and recalls that this is not the first time that ECRF and its members are subjected to harassment.

Iran:  Deterioration of the medical condition of Ms. Narges Mohammadi

The Observatory has been informed by the League for the Defence of Human Rights in Iran (LDDHI) about the deterioration of the medical condition of Ms. Narges Mohammadi, a journalist, Spokesperson and Vice-President of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), who is serving a 16-year prison sentence. Ms. Narges Mohammadi suffers from several very serious health conditions, including a pulmonary embolism and a neurological disorder that results in partial paralysis. Her health condition is exacerbated by the authorities’ refusal to allow her adequate medical care in or out of prison.

Philippines:  Senate must adopt Human Rights Defenders Bill, after landmark adoption by House of Representatives

The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a FIDH-OMCT partnership, welcomes the adoption of the Human Rights Defenders Bill by the Philippine House of Representatives, and calls on the Senate to pass a similar bill, in order to promulgate and implement a national human rights protection law in the Philippines.

Iran:  Sentencing of human rights lawyer Amir Salar Davoodi

According to information received on June 1, 2019, Branch 15 of the Islamic Revolution Court in Tehran sentenced Mr. Amir Salar Davoodi to a total of 30 years in prison (to be served concurrently), 111 lashes, a fine of 60 million Rial, and deprived him of his social rights for two years. Mr. Amir Salar Davoodi was found guilty on several charges, including 15 years under Article 498 of the Islamic Penal Code (“establishing a group to overthrow the system”) for establishing a group through a public channel on the messaging application Telegram. To date other charges are not known. Mr. Amir Salar Davoodi has decided not to appeal the sentence.

We, the undersigned civil society groups, express serious concern regarding the recent and ongoing judicial harassment of former Cambodia National Rescue Party (“CNRP”) elected officials and members through baseless arrests, summonses, and detentions across multiple provinces. We urge the Royal Government of Cambodia to immediately cease the harassment of members of the political opposition and instead take concrete measures to restore civic space and enable all individuals to exercise their rights to free expression, association, assembly and political participation.
