Rights of the Child
The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was adopted by the United Nations’ General Assembly in 1989 and has been ratified by 192 States except for the United States and Somalia, assigns States the responsibility of guaranteeing the rights of children against torture and any other ill-treatment.
OMCT’s “Children’s Rights” programme aims to protect children from torture and other forms of violence through prevention, denunciation, reparation and international appeal, and to promote and defend children’s rights. In order to attain this objective, OMCT aims to reinforce the protection of children who are victims of torture, or threatened by torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, by taking into account the specific nature of violence that is perpetrated against them. The “Children’s Rights” programme works with local partners, both members and non-members of the SOS-Torture Network, as well as in close collaboration with key international actors: the United Nations’ Committee on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF, and the NGO group for the rights of children and its members.
