United Nations Treaty Bodies

The United Nations’ system for the promotion and the protection of human rights is composed of two main types of mechanisms that allow victims and NGOs to be heard:

OMCT’s “United Nations Treaty Bodies” programme aims to facilitate the access of victims and local, national and regional NGOs to the various Treaty Bodies by providing them with legal and practical assistance. This programme also often contributes to the implementation, by State Parties, of the rights recognised in the Treaties, and participates, through lobbying activities alongside NGOs, in States’ implementation of the Treaty Bodies’ “recommendations”.

OMCT’s “United Nations Treaty Bodies” programme intervenes through the following means:

  • Alternative reports: OMCT submits alternative reports to Treaty Bodies on human rights violations. These reports are prepared in collaboration with local and national NGOs. A follow-up on the implementation of the Treaty Body’s Final Observations is also ensured.
  • Individual Communications: This activity aims to strengthen the capacity of OMCT’s Network to engage in international litigation on behalf of torture victims. It employs a three-pronged approach: Case Work, Training and Publications.
The “United Nations Treaty Bodies” programme works in close collaboration with OMCT’s “Violence Against Women” and “Children’s Rights” programmes, which also submit alternative reports to Treaty Bodies. It completes the work of the “Urgent Campaigns” and “Assistance for Victims” programmes.
