The International Secretariat of OMCT requests your URGENT intervention in the following situation in Bangladesh.
Brief description of the situation:
The International Secretariat of OMCT has been informed by the Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC), member of the OMCT network, of the death of Saiful Islam Solet (25) on 15 June, 2000 while in police custody in Tongi Thana, Gazipur district.
According to the information received, Saiful Islam Solet was arrested in connection with a theft case. According to official sources, Saiful Islam Solet committed suicide by taking pesticide. However, other sources believe that he was tortured to death during interrogation by the police.
Action requested:
Please write to the authorities in Bangladesh urging them to:
i. guarantee an immediate investigation into the death of Saiful Islam Solet in order to clarify this case and identify those responsible, bring them to trial and apply the penal, civil and/or administrative sanctions as provided by law;
ii. guarantee the right to adequate compensation to the family of Saiful Islam Solet;
iii. guarantee the respect of human rights and the fundamental freedoms throughout the country in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
