Release

Geneva, 9 March 2006

The International Secretariat of OMCT has received new information on the following situation in Nepal.

New information

The International Secretariat of OMCT has been informed by the Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC), a member of the OMCT network, that Mrs. Nisha Neupane, 24, of Geeta Nagar-3, Prithvi Nagar, Chitwan, was released in February 2006.

Reminder of the situation

According to the information received provided by INSEC, Mrs. Nisha Neupane was arrested by Security Forces on 31 March 2005 in Suryanagar Chok (Shivanagar VDC) in the Chitwan District in Nepal. Around ten armed security personnel in civilian dress allegedly arrested her at around 1pm as she was going to her sister’s house. Her family believed that she was being detained in either “Kasara Barrack” in Royal Chitwan National Park or in “Bharatpur Barrack” in Chitwan. There was reportedly no arrest warrant for her and no legal action had been taken against her. However her husband is a Maoist who is living underground. It is said that her arrest was in connection with her husband’s activities.

Remarks

OMCT wishes to thank all of the individuals and organizations that have taking action as a response to the urgent appeal and have written to the Nepalese authorities on behalf of Mrs. Nisha Neupane. No further action is currently required on your part concerning this case
