The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the FIDH and the OMCT, has received new information regarding the following situation in Pakistan.

New Information

The Observatory has been informed by the Asian Human Rights Commission of the release Fr. Arnold Heredia on 16th January 2001 and all charges dropped against him.

The Observatory wishes to thank all those institutions, organisations and individuals who intervened on his behalf.

Brief reminder of the situation

The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders was informed by the Asian Center for the Progress of Peoples (ACPP) of the arrest of Fr. Arnold Heredia (60), former Executive Secretary of the Committee for Justice & Peace Karachi, on 10 January 2001.

According to the information received, at 4 pm in Karachi, on 10 January 2001, he was arrested amongst 17 other protestors who were taking part in an anti-“Blasphemy Laws” protest held under the auspices of the All Faith Spiritual Movement in Karachi. At the time of writing, according to the information, an application for their release on bail has not been accepted. The lower court has ordered a physical remand of the detainees until January 16th 2001.
