Despite its efforts to implement the Convention against Torture, Ecuador still has to improve its human rights standards in several situations. There are many allegations of ill-treatment and abuses committed against detainees and against minors held in centres for adolescent offenders. The authorities use solitary confinement as a disciplinary measure in juvenile detention centres. Furthermore, security forces often used excessive force against protesters and journalists, including firing teargas canisters directly at individuals and at close range, brutally beating and arbitrarily detaining protesters. The Committee Against Torture considered that investigations into cases of torture, enforced disappearance and extrajudicial execution were not effectively ensured. The OMCT often reports excessive use of force by the authorities and requests prompt investigations and prosecution in these situations.
